La topografia brusca i feréstega dels Pirineus els ha erigit en un país frontera on el domini dels passos i la comunicació entre les dues bandes de la serralada ha esdevingut un factor estratègic de primer ordre. A la comarca del Ripollés hi havia diverses rutes per traspassar la ratlla jurisdiccional i arribar al Vallespir: pel coll d’Ares o pel coll del Malrem traginaven els paquetaires fent contraban de béns i queviures, de licors i tabac... en una activitat que contribuïa notablement a sanejar la magra economia local. Les seues peripècies han restat fixades al cançoner i han nodrit de llegendes l’imaginari col·lectiu.

La topografía brusca y salvaje de los Pirineos los ha erigido en un país frontera donde el dominio de los pasos y la comunicación entre los dos lados de la cordillera se ha convertido en un factor estratégico de primer orden. En la comarca del Ripollés había diversas rutas para traspasar el linde jurisdiccional y llegar al Vallespir: por el collado de Ares o por el collado del Malrem trajinaban los paqueteros haciendo contrabando de bienes y comestibles, de licores y tabaco ... en una actividad que contribuía notablemente a sanear la magra economía local. Sus peripecias han quedado fijadas en el cancionero y han alimentado de leyendas el imaginario colectivo.

The wild and harsh terrain of the Pyrenees has raised them up in a country of borders, where control of the passes and of the communication between the two sides is of prime importance. In the shire of El Ripollés there were several possible routes to cross the territorial boundary, thus reaching Vallespir: Along the mountain pass of Ares or that of Malrem travelled the paqueteros who trafficked in dry goods and foodstuffs, in spirits and tobacco in an activity that contributed notably to the meagre local economy. Their adventures have been immortalised in the cancionero and have nurtured the collective imagination with legends.
