No había en el campo trabajo más duro que la trilla: una vez segado el trigo, había que separar el grano de la paja. Un hombre, encima de un trillo que arrastraban dos bestias, daba vueltas a la era aplastando la parva extendida en la era mientras otros hombres, con horcas, aventaban la paja y amontonaban el grano. Para animar el trote del animal se cantaban unas tonadas de una profundidad expresiva inaudita que exhibían una extraña filiación oriental.

No hi havia al camp feina més dura que el batre: una vegada segat el blat, calia separar-ne el gra de la palla. Un home, dalt d’un trill que arrossegaven dues bèsties, donava voltes a l’era xafant el blat mentre altres homes, amb forques, ventaven la batuda i amuntegaven el gra. Per animar el trot de l’animal es cantaven unes tonades d’una profunditat expressiva inaudita que exhibien una estranya filiació oriental.

There was no harder work in the country than that of threshing: once the wheat had been reaped, the grain had to be separated from the straw. One man seated upon the threshingboard, which was drawn by two beasts, went in circles around the threshing floor to crush the unthreshed wheat spread out there. Meanwhile others, armed with pitchforks, winnowed the straw and piled up the grain. To liven up the animal’s trot they sang airs of an unheard-of expressive depth that revealed a curious eastern link.
