“Sol the Saint”

This hagiographical song depicts explicitly the sad fate of Sol Hachuel, a beautiful young Jewish woman. At the age of 17 years in 1834 by order of the Muslim religious court she was beheaded in Fez (at that time the seat of the Moroccan Sultan), because she did not accept to convert to Islam. The impact of this event on the Jewish communities in the region was intense: her brief life fascinated the Moroccan Jews, for which reason they looked upon her as a saint, (Sadiqá) and her tomb became a place of pilgrimage.

lyrics

– ‘No señor yo he nacido hebrea y hebrea tengo que morir’. –

Because the iniquitous Moorish schemer
Tara denunciated her for her belief they sentenced beautiful Sol.
And the governor pronounced: Recant your faith.
No, sir, I was born a Jew and as a Jew, I have to die.
In prison she was confined without anyone being able to see her.
Only God entrusted her in the care of the archangel Gabriel
When Sol left Tangier hers parents wept
they told her: my dear daughter, forswear, our God will not punish you.
Goodbye father, mother and brother, I go to prison in the presence of the king
Even though if I swear and they offer me other laws,
I will not betray mine only for my life.
Neither cry my dear mother nor do I ask for your advice
for my life is only entrusted in the hands of God.
When Sun entered the palace the daughter of the king addressed her:
follow the laws of Mahoma and you will become the wife of my father.
And the deadsman mercilessly puts his sword on her neck
and he tells her: if you want to become a Moor, you still have time to decide.
I disregard the law of Mahoma but believe in the law of Moses
which on Mount Sinai he was given in the presence of all Israel.
When Sol saw how her blood was spilled she sighed and invoked the grace of heaven
for her life was entrusted only to the hands of God.
