Rey castellano, bien apodado ‘el sabio’, destaco más por su labor científica y cultural que por la política en su reinado, patente a través de las actividades de compiladores, autores y traductores que traducen e interpretan textos religiosos y profanos del árabe, hebreo y griego al castellano, en la escuela de traductores de Toledo. Manda componer las Cantigas de Santa María, colección de canciones dedicadas a loores y milagros de la Virgen y obra capital desde el punto de vista literario, organológico, musical y pictórico siendo la colección más importante de música cortesana monódica del siglo XIII.

En su corte se reúnen intelectuales, hombres de ciencia, matemáticos, médicos, astrólogos y un número determinado de músicos judíos, cristianos, musulmanes y también de juglares porque ‘Cantares et sones e estrumentos debe el rey usar a las vegadas para tomar conorte en los pesares e en los cuidados’.

Alfonso X "El Sabio", rightly called "the Wise", was a Castilian king who became more notorious for his scientific and cultural work than for his actual reign. He was embodied by the work of compilators, authors and translators who translate and interpret religious and profane texts from Arab, Hebrew and Greek to the Spanish language, at the Translator School of Toledo. He ordered the composition of "Las Cantigas de Santa María" a collection of songs dedicated to the Virgin´s praises and miracles, which is a masterpiece from from a literary, organological, musical and pictorical point of view. It remains the most important collection of monodic courtesan music of the 13th century.
He gathered in his court the finest men of science, intellectuals,mathematicians, medical doctors, astrologists, and a determined number of Jewish, Christian and Muslim musicians, as well as minstrels, for "Songs and tunes and instruments must the king sometimes use to know his people´s grief.
