On the early evening of Ash Wednesday the Service of Darkness is held. A liturgical ceremony were all the lights of the temple are shut, the images covered and the altar bare, except for a 13 candle chandelier. The candles would be blown out one by one after each psalm. With the last one, the Miserere would be sung and the candle would be kept behind the altar, leaving nothing but darkness all around.
This song is formed by three traditional Valencian melodies. Thechrismas carol “Debajo de una penyeta” from Les Alqueries (La Plana Baixa), Gaines´”Estas fiestas de navidad” (another carol), both gathered in the “Fonoteca de Materiales” Volum XIV; and a traditional 7 beat Habanera, from the Tales dolçainer´s repertoir (La Plana Baixa). We have unified the rhythm, which probably also comes from the carols, adding and instrumental piece which reminds of the Balcanic forms where this rhythm is quite customary.

lyrics

CANSADA D’ESPERAR
EL DIA QUE EL BÉ AMB BÉ SIA PAGAT.
CANSADA DE POSAR
LA GALTA DRETA HUI i L’ALTRA GALTA DEMÀ.
CANSADA D’ESPERAR EL PARADÍS.

NO PUGUES EMPASSAR
NI UNA ENGRUNA DE PA
I, D’ALLÒ ENGOLIT,
L’ESTOMAC NO PUGA MAI PAIR.

LLAGAT ELS PEUS,
QUE NO ET DEIXEN ANAR;
NO PUGUES ACOSTAR-TE,
NO PUGUES ALCANÇAR RES AMB LES MANS
QUE TANTES NAFRES M’HAN PORTAT.

ÀNGEL CAIGUT , SOTA LES ALES DUS LA FALÇ
PER A SEGAR LA SOCA I L’ARREL ,TAL CAPS.
NO MEREIXES LA VIDA I TINDRÀS MORT.

DE CROSTES PLENS ELS PEUS
NO PUGUEN JA SANAR.
I ENCARA ES POC CASTIC
PER AL QUI HA FURTAT LA LLUM AL MÓN,
PER AL QUI HA DEIXAT AL QUI VEU ORB.

EL MEU MILLOR DESIG: QUE NO ET MUIGUES I PROU!
QUE PAGUES COR I COS!
SENSE SER DÉU ET CONDEMNE A L’AVERN.
NO ET MEREIXES LA VIDA. TIN LA MORT.
