“La infantina”

Dentro del amplio repertorio sefardí conservado en la oralidad, es un romance especial ya que es casi el único romance con una trama que presenta hechos mágicos. El caballero que no se decide a llevarse a la doncella que ha encontrado en el bosque y por su hesitación, la pierde. El tema presenta un mundo tal vez relacionado con antiguas creencias sobre divinidades femeninas y árboles mágicos. El texto figura en colecciones del siglo XVII y recogido en Cataluña y Portugal.

“The infanta”

Within the wide Sephardic repertoire this is a special romance since it is almost the only one with a plot that presents magical facts. The cavalier who does not decide on taking the maiden with him he'd found in the forest, loses her again because he hesitates to long. The story carries us to a world predominated by old beliefs in feminine divinities and magical trees. The text appears in compilations of the seventeenth century, collected in Catalonia and Portugal.

A cazar iba el caballero a cazar como solía.
Los perros le iban cazando y el halcón perdido iba.

¿Dónde le cogió la noche? en una oscura montiña,
donde canta la leona y el león le respondía.

Donde cae la nieve a copo y el agua menuda y fría.
– ‘Oy, válgame Dios del cielo, oy qué bonito cantare.

Si son ángeles del cielo o serena de los mares.’ –
– ‘Ni son ángeles del cielo ni serena de los mares.

Persona soy caballero, como vos fui yo nacida.
Estas fadas me fadaron y en haldas de una mi tía.

Que me quede siete años en esta oscura montiña,
hoy se cumplen los siete años o mañana el medio día.

Por tu vida el caballero, lleveisme en tu compañía.
O lleveisme por mujer o lleveisme por amiga

O lleveisme por esclava, os serviré toda mi vida’. –
– ‘Madre vieja tengo en casa, su consejo tomaría.’ –

Y el consejo que le diera por mujer la más querida.
Dio de vuelta el caballero no halló roble ni niña.

Siete duques la llevaban y un rey que más valía.
Su padre y sus siete hermanos que en su búsqueda venían.

Hombre que tal prenda pierde ¿qué castigo merecía?:
que le aten pies y manos y le arrastren por la vía.
