“A carpenter as a husband” .
Wedding song, chosen from the huge abundance of songs of this genre. These songs reveal the connection of Sephardic lyric with medieval Spanish, which is shown in the way phrases and scenes out of ancient Spanish lyric live on. In the first song, as a stereotype of Hispanic lyric (las cantigas de amigo), the bride visits her mother to get up early on a Monday, a bustling day in several romances, to go to "find a husband on the market". The choice of someone hard working and professionally successful reflects the values of Sephardic society. Some verse emphasize the virginity of the bride, whose key of her locked strongbox is kept by the bridegroom-to-be.

lyrics

Monday in the morning mother I will get up
I will go to the market at the crack of dawn.
To find me a husband of honor and fame.
A Carpenter he is and master they call him.
Master craftsman, repair my footlocker,
with a key of gold and a lock of silver
Made is that bed for an honorable bride,
with five mattrasses and linen from Holland.
And at midnight and you will say
you are softer than the finest of silk.
Monday in the morning mother I will get up
I will go to the market at the crack of dawn.
