Al pasar por Casablanca

from SEFARAD EN EL CORAZÓN DE MARRUECOS by Mara Aranda

about

“On the way to Casablanca”(“Don Bueso and his sister” or “The captured sister”).

It is also a pan-European theme in which a maid is kidnapped. While she is doing her laundry in the river, a cavalier volunteers to take her back to Spain, and on the way he finds out that she is his own sister. The oldest variety in hexasyllabic verses is also sung in Morocco, but the better known version in octosyllabic verses that possibly came from Andalusia and was integrated into the Sephardic repertoire.

lyrics

On the way from Casablanca I traversed Moorish territory
when I saw a Moor laundering at the foot of a cold well.
Step aside, pretty Moor, step aside, beautiful Moor,
let me water my horses from these crystal clear spring.
I am not a Moor, cavalier, but a Christian captive,
I was captured by the Moors on Easter Day.
If you want to come to Spain with me I would take you there.
And what about my clothes, chevalier, where shall I leave them?
Whatever is of silk and value take it with you,
and what is cheap the river will sweep away.
And what about my honor, master, whom can I confide it to?
I will not touch your honor unless you are mine.
Passing through those fields the girl cries and sighs.
Why are you crying, beautiful Moor, why are you crying, pretty Moor?
I cry because my father came to hunt in these fields
together with my little brother and all his company.
What do I hear? Holy Virgin Mary!
Instead of bringing a wife I return my sister.
Mother, open the door, all the windows and galleries,
because the rose you bewept night and day has reappeared.
Father, open the balconies, all the doorways and blinds,
because who you wept for I bring home as a blossomed rose.
